Pizza Quest; In Search Of Raleigh’s Best Pizza v2

I set out on a quest in search of the best pizza in Raleigh, my home town, and here’s what I’ve found thus far.

By the Slice

New York-style pizza is great by the pie, but true New Yorkers also enjoy it by the slice, so when I went in search of Raleigh’s best pizza there were two standouts in this category. Tony’s on Glenwood North and Sergio’s ….. Thin crust and foldable not too much sauce.

Local and Loving It

Several Raleigh pizza conniseurs who responded were adamant I limit my research to non-chain pizza restaurants. This lead me to Lilly’s and the Lynwood Grill…. info info info on both…. One I’ve not been to yet, but have it on good authority is wonderful is Frank’s on New Bern Ave.

Close to Campus

College and pizza go together like bread and butter so naturally, I wanted to find great pizza close to the N.C. State campus on Hillsborough Street. I was delighted to find Bocci, a brand new restaurant with a Tuscan vibe and great atmosphere directly across the street. ….. Nanna-style light and satisfying, and the calamari and dipping bread is a special treat….

Chain, Chain, Chain …

Although several pizza purists encouraged me to avoid chains, I heard from so many who loved pizza from the chains, I could not ignore them. First I visited Brixx Wood Fired in Brier Creek… had the Hawaiian topped with pineapple and ham – light crust not too doughy 10″ ideal for sharing adn moderately priced.

Mellow Mushroom is a popular chain founded in Atlanta and has reached across the southeast and beyond. A sunny, not-too-humid day was perfect to sampling pizza in what has to be one of the best outdoor seating areas in Raleigh. Mellow Mushroom at the corner of Glenwood Avenue and Peace Street provides awesome pizza and a hippy atmosphere. Yes, I do see the humor that the mushroom is giving a peace sign in front of the Peace Street sign. The pizza is excellent, stonebaked and a variety of cool combinations. We went for half pepperoni and half Magical Mystery Tour. The pizza is filling and the salads are pretty awesome too.

Unexpected Pizza

What’s unexpected pizza?

It’s good pizza found in the most unexpected places. I met a friend for lunch one day at Trali Irish Pub in the Brier Creek section of Raleigh and she encouraged me to try their BBQ chicken pizza. Wow, was I surprised. The crust is flaky, almost like pie crust and the BBQ sauce along with the chicken and cheese is an ideal blend of sweet and savory. I was happily surprised at this unexpected pizza discovery.

More of Raleigh’s Best Pizza

The best part of writing a story about Raleigh’s Best Pizza is that the quest never really ends. There’s so much more pizza out there yet to be enjoyed and these are just a few of the many offerings.

Do you have a favorite Raleigh pizza place I haven’t mentioned? Let me know.

Now, I’m off to train for a 5K run I signed up for to counter my extensive pizza research.
